Pian degli Ontani fountain

Leaving Cutigliano and then the state road to Abetone, turning left at the Casotti crossroads, you travel along the right side of the Sestaione Valley, easily reaching Pian degli Ontani. A village immersed in woods, mainly beech and chestnut, and not alder as we would be led to believe; these trees, present today only in minimal part, must have once been very consistent. The main square, on which stands the Church of SS. Maria and Cirillo, is delimited by a surrounding wall: it is along this facing, almost in front of the sacred building, that we find this graceful fountain, of non-monumental proportions, but of very respectable workmanship. The wall with quadrangular blocks at a certain point is interrupted to make room for a niche that houses the fountain inside. Consisting of a semicircular molded basin, hoisted on a semicircular base, it is in fact incorporated into a niche, formed by two pillars, each composed of seven square blocks, which support a monolithic architrave with slopes. In the center is the metal pipe in the shape of a snake's head, so common in our area. Recently, next to the fountain, a few meters away, a monument dedicated to "Beatrice di Pian degli Ontani" was placed; the work of the sculptor Vinicio Betti, it consists of a sandstone slab, carved with the effigy of the famous shepherdess poet. It was inaugurated on June 18, 2000: for that occasion the entire Acerone square was restored, with it obviously our fountain, which in fact has modern stucco and is in perfect condition.
