Lungo il viale di San Vito

The beautiful avenue that runs alongside the parish church and winds from the town, and through an enchanting walk reaches the Poggio di San Vito, follows an ancient path, thanks to which you can cross the Apennines, which actually has its origins in Roman times, and which constituted the connection between Pistoia and Modena. The itinerary, which from Lizzano reached Cutigliano and then headed, through the Passo dell’Alpe alla Croce (today Croce Arcana) towards the valley of Ospitale, then Fanano, finally Modena, had a notable boost in the Lombard era, until it took on greater importance in the 12th – 13th century, which it maintained throughout the Middle Ages. On the route of that same road still stands the church of San Bartolomeo. From here, proceeding along the path you come across two fountains, pleasant thirst-quenching stops during the walk; the first of these is located in correspondence with the last houses of via Pacioni: the fountain is made in a large niche framed by an arch of squared sandstone blocks, while the bottom, recently made, is made of lime and pebbles in a “False rustic” style. The fountain is placed against this, whose pilla, made from a single block of sandstone is surmounted by a bas-relief mask from whose mouth comes out the bronze spout. The style of the mask, as well as of the basin, can be attributed to the first half of the 19th century. Locality Cutigliano
