Fonte di San Bernardino

The fountain in via Pacioni, near the parish church, is dedicated to S. Bernardino: the character depicted in one of the most notable works of art in Cutigliano, the Pala Robbiana kept in the Church of the Madonna di Piazza. The altarpiece, attributed to the work of Benedetto Buglioni from the first decade of the 16th century, shows the Saint to the right of the Virgin's throne; the choice of the character is not accidental since San Bernardino da Siena actually stayed in Cutigliano in 1437, a guest of Cecco di Pace, reciting fiery sermons in the town that deeply touched the people of Cutigliano. The fountain in question is already mentioned in the 15th century: today the artifact, walled inside a large niche, has undergone alterations between the 18th and 19th centuries, but it is likely that the sandstone basin of a single block, resting on a monolithic base, could be much older even if the repetition, with few variations, of motifs and typologies up to the 19th century, makes a precise chronological placement difficult.
