Fonte della Pievana

Fonte della Pievana

Among the oldest examples in Gavinana, it is worth mentioning the small fountain “della Pievana”, already mentioned in a document from the end of the 14th century; it is a simple brick monument that stands on the small basin on the ground, finished with a small stone roof, with a bronze spout at the top in the centre; however, the structure is probably a modern remake. The fountain is placed against a votive niche, which was originally painted, but, the figure having been lost, it has recently been replaced by a rectangular painted terracotta tile, depicting the profile of the Madonna's face. Underneath a stone plaque is engraved the letters F.T. C.F. F. A. and the date 1833, perhaps referring to the placing of the new tile and perhaps to the renovation of the tabernacle and its fountain.
