Fonte dei Gorghi

Fonte dei Gorghi

Another noteworthy fountain at the entrance to the village of Gavinana is the so-called “Fonte dei Gorghi”: located to the left of the structure that houses the public wash wells, near the bridge that bears the same name, where the traditional and folkloristic “Bacio dei Cristi” takes place every year. This too is leaning against a votive shrine, confirming how these artifacts, an expression of a heartfelt popular religiosity, are present in very high numbers in our mountain. The fountain consists of a very simple structure, being made up only of a mighty stone parallelepiped, on which the quadrangular basin opens. Of uncertain dating, we know however that it was certainly present, together with the shrine, at the end of the 19th century, as shown by some period photos. Locality Gavinana
