Fontana di Piazza a Maresca

Fontana di Piazza a Maresca

On the left side of Piazza Ludovico Appiano, the main square in the town, near the parish church, is this beautiful fountain in carved sandstone, a humble local artefact. Walled into the boundary wall of the park behind, it consists of a large oval pilla carved from a single block of pietra serena, resting on a sandstone panel in which are made the two holes for the bronze spouts, in the upper part of which is engraved the date of construction: 1862. The wall, animated by irregular bumps, frames it with two pilasters and a tympanum. It is expected that from it, called by the locals "il pillone", pure water flows, since even the famous shepherdess poet, Beatrice di Pian degli Ontani, sang: "O peach blossom, you are won in kindness by Maresca, rich in beautiful women and fresh water".
