Della Loggia Fountain

Near the “Palazzo dei Capitani” there is also this fountain. We cannot say who designed the “Palazzo dei Capitani”, but it is certain that Cutigliano also follows the typical models of this era, the era born with the flourishing of the Tuscan municipalities, the 13th century, “the century of the people”, which also saw the rise of public buildings as an expression of municipal freedom and in service of the need for a meeting place to discuss common issues in common; even if on a small scale and late, even the smaller towns equipped themselves with the appropriate headquarters for the constituted authority and this happened in Cutigliano, where the situation of the Florentine capital was proposed on a smaller scale: near the small building is the loggia, here arranged almost in front of the building and connected to it by a fountain, dating back to the 15th century. It is located on the left edge of the building, arranged perpendicularly to the facade; It consists of a facing of squared sandstone blocks, on which rests the large monolithic basin that receives water from a bronze spout, all placed on two steps; it is flanked by a sculpted copy of the column with the Marzocco, the original of which has been housed inside the loggia since the seventies for conservation reasons. It is likely that, at least for a certain period, it was the only source of water in the town. Locality Cutigliano
